Mozilla Community Gigabit Fund and The 2nd Floor of the Downtown Chattanooga Public Library

If you’ve been paying attention to the news in Chattanooga recently you’ve most likely heard a lot about the Mozilla Community Gigabit Fund.  So what exactly is Mozilla doing in Chattanooga?  The aim of the Community Gigabit Fund is to “provide grants and resources for innovators exploring the use of next-generation gigabit technologies in Kansas City and Chattanooga.”

The Chattanooga Public Library, which is one of the only gig connected libraries in the world, was actually involved in quite a few of the grants and projects that were funded in the past six months (which you can read about here and here).

But what you may not know is how these grants are helping kids, tweens, and teens on The 2nd Floor of the Downtown Chattanooga Public Library. Partnerships between the Chattanooga Public Library, HyperAudio, and Viditor have brought some new creation stations and programs to The 2nd Floor.

In partnership with HyperAudio, an online audio and video tool that uses text transcripts to help with editing, the 2nd Floor acquired four new iMac stations. These iMacs that now live on the 2nd Floor to make up the HyperAudio Creation Station, a place where kids, tweens, and teens can try out HyperAudio and make their own video creations before HyperAudio becomes avaliable to the public. The HyperAudio Creation Station will also serve as the location for our partnership with Viditor. This past Saturday, Andrew and Stuart from the Viditor team visited the library and gave kids, tweens, and teens a sneak peek at Viditor, a cloud based video editor that was designed and developed locally in Chattanooga.

HyperAudio and Viditor on The 2nd Floor of the Downtown Chattanooga Public Library offer kids, tweens, and teens in the community a very unique opportunity: the chance to test out a new technology before it goes public. In a way, Chattanooga's youth community are the beta testers for these new tools. Their input on how these tools work and how they are used has a great impact on the further development of these tools, making them more user and education friendly.

It's an exciting time to be in Chattanooga for our kids, tweens, and teens.  The youth of Chattanooga have a voice in shaping the future.
