Inclusion Piano Study for Children

An event every week that begins at 4:00pm on Tuesday, repeating until February 26, 2019
Musical training is a wonderful activity to promote neural development and a delightful social interaction in an inclusive group of children. This once-per-week group after-school piano course is specially designed to appeal to neurotypical and neurodiverse students. The course’s eight-week curriculum is suitable for beginner students (ages 7-12); no prior music training is required for enrollment eligibility. Neurodiverse students will require an aide or caregiver to accompany them to provide extra help as needed; neurotypical students should also have a parent or caregiver present.
Start Date: January 8, 2019. The class meets on Tuesdays, from 4:00-4:45pm at the downtown Chattanooga Public Library and the class ends on February 26th.
This eight-week music course will meet once-a-week for group classes. Thecurriculum will cover basic essentials of learning the musical alphabet and basic rhythmic patterns. The class will learn to play simple musical selections as a group and students will also be encouraged to practice independently. Repertoire will include pop, classical, and children’s tunes. Each child will learn to play by reading musical notation or color-coded notation (as individual skill and learning style permit). Neurodiverse and neurotypical students will be paired together as often as possible to play musical duets together during class.
Materials will be provided as part of the course enrollment.
Dr. Martha Summa-Chadwick, DMA, has achieved a wide reputation as a performer of chamber and solo works for piano and also as an advocate of the use of music in therapy. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Hartt School of Music, a Master of Music degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas. Dr. Summa-Chadwick has performed in roles of both piano and harpsichord soloist with orchestras in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and Alabama, and has also specialized in performing 20th century chamber and solo works. She has completed both Academy and Fellowship level training at Colorado State University's Center for Biomedical Research in Music. Dr. Summa-Chadwick is currently on the faculty of the Cadek Conservatory in Chattanooga and is the Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Music Therapy Gateway In Communications, Inc. For
