What’s Ableton and how can I make music using my computer?

The purpose of this public, non-traditional community class is to give musicians, songwriters, producers, and self educators an opportunity to learn how to use a really fun piece of software to make music. People of all ages and levels of proficiency will learn how to use MIDI and apply concrete fundamentals of audio engineering, music theory, music production, and studio ethics. This is both an absolute beginner class and a professional level production course.

What will I gain from coming to this class?

  • What MIDI is and how to control it
  • How to plug in an audio interface, how to install drivers
  • How to do a sound design session, foundational concepts of both analog and digital synthesis
  • Proper Archiving and File Management
  • An understanding of how to use Ableton to produce music, compose, song write, and perform
  • Learn through group activity basic music theory concepts for beat making, songwriting, and composing
  • Basic Audio engineering concepts involving signal flow, audio effects, and plugins
  • Insights on how to teach yourself
  • How to listen to music critically and use that skill as a tool for composition
  • Studio philosophy and how to explore your creativity

What’s the goal?

By coming to this class you’ll gain a plethora of knowledge and learn in a comfortable non-traditional atmosphere. The goal is that you will get an opportunity to be in a room full of professionals and beginners who all have the same passion for making music. You’ll learn either the skills needed to use Ableton to make music, or you’ll learn how to apply previously learned skills in audio engineering within Ableton and expand your software arsenal.
