LibArt Live!

Introducing LibArt Live! The Association for Visual Arts (AVA) and Chattanooga Public Library (CPL) are excited to present an interactive series of art classes that celebrate the relationship of storytelling and the visual arts.

Each class will be led by a different professional artist who will discuss their favorite book and guide you in an inspired creative project resulting in an original piece. LibArt Live! offers something for everyone, so choose your art, grab a book and mark your calendars!

June 1: Watercolor
Join artist Jaime Barks for a watercolor project and discussion about Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Supplies you’ll need:

  • Watercolor paint
  • Paint brush(es)
  • Watercolor paper
  • Permanent ink pen

June 8: Mixed Media
Join artist Jake Strauss for a mixed media project and a discussion about Crazy, Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. Supplies you’ll need:

  • White cardstock paper
  • Green crepe/tissue paper 
  • Cotton twine or sturdy yarn
  • Skinny wooden dowels or skewers
  • Assorted acrylic paints – white, yellow, pink, green
  • Small paint brushes
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil 
  • Vase or container for flowers

June 15: Sculpture
Join artist Michelle Leavy for a sculpture project and a discussion about The Beach House by Mary Alice Munroe. You’ll be creating a ceramic loggerhead turtle sculpture, inspired by the artist’s childhood in Florida. Supplies you’ll need:

  • Clay (stoneware, earthenware, modeling clay, model magic, terra cotta or another type of clay
  • A cup for water/slip
  • Texture tools such as a plastic spoon, a plastic knife, toothpicks or anything else that will scratch the surface of clay
  • A mat, plastic placemat or newspaper to cover your workspace 
  • Paper towels

June 22: Weaving
Join artist Sadaf Khan for a weaving project and a discussion about The Qur’an. Supplies you’ll need:

  • Old cotton t-shirts or any leftover fabric materials
  • Small/medium size canvas frame or picture frame (about 12×18 inches)
  • Thick count of cotton thread (ex. 10.4 mm to 10.8 mm) or cross stitch embroidery thread
  • At least 3 tapestry needles
  • A comb

June 29: Portrait Drawing
Join artist Alex Loza for a portrait drawing project and a discussion about Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. Supplies you’ll need:

  • Sketchbook or copy paper
  • Number 2 pencils
  • Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener 
  • Colored pencils (optional)
