Silk & Shades Public Art Installation Debuts at the Downtown Library

CHATTANOOGA, TN – The Chattanooga Public Library is hosting the Silk & Shades Opening Reception Friday, October 4, 2019. The event celebrates the completion of this summer’s series of silk painting workshops led by artist Claire Vassort.
Through a grant from the Lyndhurst Foundation, the downtown library launched an artist-in-residence program earlier this year. Vassort, a native of France who moved to Chattanooga in 2001, offered children and adults free silk painting classes throughout the summer. The collection of silk banners created in those workshops will be displayed on the first floor of the downtown library for a two-year run.
Featuring natural elements such as birds and leaves, the silk paintings are as unique as the techniques used to paint them. With over 30 years of experience in silk painting, Vassort has created an installation that serves to not only invite patrons into the library, but also to invite creativity and imagination.
